Our story · Tamil Nadu → Melbourne
Some recipes know the way home.
āhāra began with two families from Tamil Nadu who made Melbourne home in the early 2000s. They arrived carrying the flavours that had shaped them—and found that a familiar meal could make a new city feel less far from home.
Fresh dosa batter left to ferment. Curry leaves crackling in hot oil. Curries and snacks made from recipes learned by watching the hands before theirs. Around the table, memory became something they could cook, serve and pass on.
Today, Chef Shazia’s Pakistani heritage adds another thread to that story. Together, these traditions meet with respect: South Indian roots, the comfort of beloved curries, and a table generous enough to hold both.
āhāra means nourishment. For us, that means more than satisfying hunger. It is feeding memory, keeping culture alive, and making room for family, friends and strangers to feel at home.
Every plate carries a little of where we came from—and an invitation to share where we are now.
